Reiki is a form of healing that openly invites people from all walks of life. Not just to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of this great system but also to learn and pass on this gift of life and love to others. Undergoing Reiki training is like walking an extremely spiritual path made of Light. There are various degrees or levels in Reiki which define the different steps of evolvement of an initiate form Level 1 to the Level of a Reiki Master. These are different for the different forms of Reiki involving three in the Usui system of Reiki to up to seven levels or more. Reiki training can only be given by a trained Reiki Master.
A reiki training basically involves a certain part of the art that us broken down into levels which have a certain syllabus that is taught in each level. This again can change from one institute to the next and from Mater to the other. In the Usui system, there are three Levels or Degrees. In the first level, the student receives up to four attunements and is now able to channelise Reiki energy for themselves and s/he can use this for healing themselves or others. In the second level only one attunement is given and the student is taught the three of the four sacred symbols of Reiki, now the flow of energy becomes even more stronger. The third level or the Master's level is an extremely difficult training that an initiate has to go through to achieve the status of Master. After receiving a Master attunement the initiate can teach Reiki to others and perform initiations for level 1. The time period for learning Reiki isn't a fixed quotient, it too may differ and many schools or Masters require their student applying for the Master level to do an apprenticeship for a year's time to ensure that they are committed and ready to take on a challenge and responsibility that will last for life.
A recognized institution will also offer a certificate to their students on the successful completion of the training. During training there are some schools that are more like Reiki ashrams and might require you to stay there and practice a complete detoxification of the system and require a certain lifestyle that is ascetic in nature. Though this is not an absolute requirement but it is said to heighten the power of the training process especially at the Master stage. For others it is advisable to practice a natural and a 'sattvic' lifestyle a week to at the very least three days before an attunement. This may include giving up meat, alcohol and 'tamasic' foods or even fasting and giving up modern amenities.
Lastly, a Reiki training is something that remains with a person for a lifetime and the student should respect the value of this treasure. It is something that can only grow and evolve into something more beautiful and stronger with the passage of time. It is not something that ends with a certificate, in fact obtaining a certificate only strengthens the intent for putting out healing and compassion into this world.

There are a variety of Reiki modalities and Reiki training courses that differ according to the students knowledge and experience. Training is different when you are beginner than when you have had a few attunements and have a better idea of what Reiki is.
This article will review the basic levels to give you an idea of the Reiki process as a whole.
In Reiki Level One or First Degree you are introduced to energy through a practice called attunement. You will acquire Level One after you learn about the 4 attunements; the information is taught in two days. The teachings will expose you to the healing energy of Reiki. This is called an initiation and it is where the Reiki Master will teach you how to open your chakras so you can receive this powerful Universal Life Force.
During each attunement you will be developing your relationship with energy. You will learn how it feels within your body, and how to work with it. You will also learn of the effects on using this Life Energy on yourself and others.
Once you have been attuned to Level One, you will be capable of channeling the Reiki energy. Channeling means bringing energy to your body at will and then being able to transfer it to others.
All of this learning is a process that happens during attunements and in between them, as you get to practice on yourself. This is why Reiki training courses are given throughout several days to allow your system to settle into this new space. It will take up to 21 days for complete cleansing. This means you will let go of the negative energy in your system. When you conclude Level One, you will be able to send healing energy to all living beings.
Reiki Level Two training or Second Degree should be done at least two months after you have completed Reiki Level One. This is to allow time for your vibration to build up and remain high on a regular basis.
Level Two is also a two day Reiki course where you will receive another attunement with the goal to increase your vibration and introduce you to three of the four reiki symbols. You will also learn how to make each of these symbols work. A Reiki Level Two practitioner may be able to start healing at a distance.
Once you conclude Reiki Level Two training, you will again have to go through a 21 day cleaning phase where you'll remove any negative energy that your body may be holding.
Most Reiki students will be pleased with what they have learned after completing Level Two. But a few will be interested in becoming Masters so they will continue to Reiki Level Three training.
There are two options for Level Three. The first one is called “3A” and it is meant for those that want to become Masters to practice Reiki on themselves and others but are not interested in teaching Reiki.
The second and final option is Third Degree or Reiki Master in which you will not only be a healer but you'll become a trainer as well.
It is recommended to wait between 6 to 12 months before taking Reiki Level Three, to allow for extensive practice and experience. When you feel ready, you will again undergo a two day session so you may receive your final attunement. There will be another 21 day cleaning period after this attunement. The highest form of energy is received during this Level Three training. Some courses may also include a new Reiki modality in the syllabus, such as the Seichim to help you through.
What makes this last degree different is that you will learn Reiki from an instructor's perspective.
This will enable you as the practitioner to come up with your own lesson plans, and develop your guides and manuals to teach Reiki. One subject you will learn in this level is related to the boundaries and ethics of being a Reiki Master. Some reiki training courses will require you to pass a test that consists on creating a Level One module for training meant to treat new patients.
There are many ways in with you can enroll in a Reiki training course. It is available in some institutions, through home study programs, online learning classes and distance instruction. You just have to do some research for you to find the best option available for you.
If you decide to join a class, look for one with a limited amount of students for you to get plenty of hands-on experience, and individual attention from the instructor. They are usually limited to 4 to 8 students.
We are all able to learn and experience the wonders of Reiki. No prior experience or qualifications are required other than to keep an open mind to let the positive energy flow and achieve balance in body, mind and spirit.
The “Reiki Master Training” site is dedicated to those who want to explore and learn about this magnificent healing art, as well as for those who are interested in becoming a Reiki Master through distant learning. Get a free introductory mini-course at http://www.Reiki-Master-Training.com

My Reiki master warned me this could happen ~ though just experienced it for the first time last night.
I was told that I would be more open to ’seeing’ things I may not normally. I wasn’t asleep when this happened. It did spook me at the time…..my training was done months ago and have never experienced anything previously. My Reiki master seems to be very psychic and sees spirits regularly
No. I am a Reiki Master and I never warn anyone about this phenomenon because it just is not related to Reiki. I suggest that your experience was directly related to the "warning" you received.
Reiki does not cause such dreams.
All the best with your reiki training! It’s a wonderful method! Be grateful!
Some Reiki teachers contend that attunements can not be sent from a distance. When I was first learning Reiki I believed this and, wanting to learn as much about Reiki as I could, wanted to understand why a distant attunement wasn’t possible. Though I never found a definite reason, the most common explanation I encountered was that the teacher must be present to channel the energy of the attunement for the student and this could not be done at a distance. For some reason, this explanation never satisfied me. After gaining my Master Teacher certification, however, I began to disagree with the the idea that distant attunements are not possible. As a teacher, I have performed numerous distant attunements and all of them have been quite successful. Since I have never found solid reasons why some say it can’t be done, I can’t address their argument but I can address why I believe it is possible to send a distant attunement.
When I was training to become a Reiki Teacher, I was taught that the most important ingredient in an attunement is intent, and this holds true of every other aspect of Reiki as well. I learned that when I give an attunement I am only acting as a channel for the energy and that the attunement would be carried to the student through my intent. What I found interesting is this description of an attunement sounds exactly like a distant Reiki session and I have yet to come across a Reiki Teacher or practitioner of level 2 or higher that disputes the ability to send Reiki from a distance. So the logical question arose–if I am acting as a channel for the Reiki energy during a distant session and it is carried to the client, why couldn’t I act as a channel for a distant attunement and have that energy carried to the student as well? In my experience with distant attunements, this is exactly what happens.
I know the idea of working from a distance, either for an attunement or a session, sounds quite unusual. After all, how can energy be sent from one point to another? My theory on this (I am not a scientist but I have done some reading on this subject) is that since electromagnetic fields extend infinitely into space at the speed of light and thoughts create measurable electromagnetic fields [this is how magnetoencephalographs are able to measure brain activity without having to place electrodes directly on the head. Instead, a Super Quantum Induction Device (probe) is placed near the head and measures the magnetic fields emanating from the brain], then it stands to reason that thought (intention) is capable of traveling everywhere at the speed of light. [ref. The Energy Healing Experiments by Dr. Gary E Schwartz. Pg. 22, 26; "The New Biology-Where Mind and Matter Meet" video lecture, by Dr. Bruce Lipton. time: 1:21:11]. This means that my intention to send a distant attunement allows it to be sent anywhere in the world.
So now the question is–if a Reiki session or attunement is traveling everywhere all at once, why doesn’t everyone in the world receive it? One possible explanation is a quantum physics concept known as Wave-Particle Duality. Wave-Particle Duality is the concept that all matter and energy behave like both a wave and a particle. A wave can be thought of as radiant energy and a particle as being matter. They exist on the one hand in states which evolve like waves when they are not observed, and like particles when observed. The key is the observation. So it is possible that when a Reiki practitioner focuses on a single client during a session or a teacher focuses on a student for an attunement, since the observation is on that individual, only that person will see a result. I don’t know for sure that this is how sessions and attunements work over a distance but it is one possibility.
I learned in my first Reiki class that Reiki is unlimited and it certainly has shown itself to be that way in my experiments with it. One thing that is very clear to me is that, regardless of the mechanism, my experience and the experiences of many, many other Reiki Teachers show that attunements can definitely be sent over a distance.

My energy is WAY off balance. I would love to channel this energy, however I can’t seem to get it straightened out. Crazy things happen when energy is wacky. This is a metaphysical technique. Grounding and centering doesn’t seem to be enough.
I would find someone who is experienced in healing therapy.
True reiki training cannot be found in a book or video lecture. Because of the nature of this system of healing, it must be passed on by Master to student over a period of time and effort to become proficient in the art.
Reiki was originally developed as a modern revision of some of the ancient Japanese healing secrets by Dr Makao Usui. Dr. Usui was a Christian and teacher who through study of ancient Buddhist and Hindu practices, meditation and research, developed the system of natural healing by the laying on of hands.
As Dr Usui’s pioneering work caught the attention of lay people, he collected a cadre of followers, one of whom, Chujiro Hayashi was trained to take his place. True to the ancient traditions of Reiki master and students, Hayashi opened a Reiki training school in Tokyo where the next Reiki Master, this time Mrs. Hawayo Takata, was selected and trained. She emigrated to the U.S. and for 25 years until 1970 was the only Usui method Reiki Grand Master in the world. During the decade ending 1980 she trained a total of 21 Reiki Masters and her granddaughter Phyllis Lea Furumoto is the current Reiki Grand Master
Although there are other forms of Reiki today with other training methods accepted, the traditional Usui Reiki requires a direct lineage of student to Master all the way back to Hayashi.
Training for Usui Reiki is usually divided into three levels. Level I training requires one weekend to learn and is taught by a Reiki Master. The Reiki Master will help the students to become comfortable by discussing motivations for taking the class, chatting with classmates and drinking herbal tea. The definition of Reiki “universal life force” and an understanding of how it works are presented, followed by presentation of Attunements 1 and 2. Attunements are a ceremony of spirit. It follows a prescribed sequence of movements, chants, symbols and hand positions by the Reiki Master over the students. Attunements 3 and 4 in the training sequence follow the lunch break. During the morning, students are taught the 12 hand positions for a self-treatment, and in the afternoon, they proceed to use the same hand-movements to give others a treatment. The completion of this Level makes you a Reiki Level I.
Level II is completed in much the same manner; however, in order to take Level II, you must be invited to do so by the Master. There is a strong recommendation that you not continue with Level II until at least three weeks have elapsed since taking Level I, during which time you have practiced what you have learned and that you are sure you’re ready to move on. Level II is taught in two 3 hour sessions, with at least a two hour break between sessions so that you have time to memorize the reiki symbols which you will be taught during the first session. Two attunements are given, one during each session. You will be asked to draw and name each of the symbols and to correctly use them. Completion of this class means you are a Reiki II.
Level III Reiki is sometimes called Reiki Master. It may require a 8 hour class weekly for several weeks. It’s important that those who aspire to reach the Reiki Master level are able to both give and teach others to give the attunements that are the key to successful practice of Reiki techniques. While other healing methods use hand positions to stimulate the life energy, only Reiki does it in coordination with self-attunement.
