In the various stages of Reiki mastering, you obtain knowledge in Reiki symbols. Reiki Symbols originated from Sanskrit and are used in Japan. Sanskrit is known as the mother of all languages, and known as the original writing.

Reiki symbols are healing symbols which are said to channel the life force energy. This helps to contribute to higher levels of awareness and Manifestation. During mastery of Reiki, the student learns a symbol at a time at the various degrees of masters. This is to help the student learn them slowly and retain the information gained.

The symbols are known to unlock the mind into deeper meanings and unlock gates to the deeper mind the more a student learns. To a master, these symbols have a greater meaning and can be used in more ways then a student can imagine.

When activating a Reiki Symbol, you also unlock the ability to help obtain a goal that is desired. Multiple signs also unlock a master the universal life energy. These symbols have a greater purpose though, they are used to help the student in his healing, which is very important to the Reiki practice.

Reiki symbols themselves have no real healing power, this is derived from the actual Reiki Master. reiki symbols as a whole are not unlocked to a student until they have attained the second level. These symbols may also change slightly from Reiki Master to Reiki master because of the meanings that a master would like to conifer with his students.

There are those however that believe that Reiki symbols should not be shared, although most masters will easily teach students them with no problems for a fee of course. There are various forms of the Reiki symbols through out the world, so learning them can be quite a task.

However, this is not an issue considering you can learn them and how to practically use them when attaining your Reiki Mastership. It may take some time but if this path is something you want then you will know by level 2 that you can learn the practical uses and what the symbols are.

Like any symbol, they are merely training wheels. As you progress through Reiki, you may actually come to find that using the reiki symbols are no longer necessary.

The symbols themselves are usually held sacred by Reiki practitioners. With that said, many practitioners will not openly divulge them to you – it wouldn’t do much good anyway, if you knew them or not – if you havent been trained in their use. It would be like someone giving you an airplane without you knowing how to fly it. Seek training in Reiki first. Learn how to access and utilize Reiki before digging deeper. Learn to walk before you run.

I would recommend Frank Petters books if you’d like more info. For the most part it is historically accurate (coming from someone who knows Japanese history as well as Japanese culture and Theology). I would also recommend The Reiki Sourcebook – another fairly accurate book on Reiki, not without its flaws.

I would suggest not getting books by Diane Stein or Maureen Kelly. Both of these authors present grossly misleading information presented as fact. If you know your history about Japan and Reiki, you’d know this to be the case (IMHO, these are typical new age versions of Reiki, presenting a lot of not so historically accurate info).

The energy involved, the Ki, was and still is the root of the entire body of Chinese medicine, where it is known as chi. Its name is actually meant to be a mantra that helps one connect with the symbol's energy, and means “Right consciousness is the root for everything”, or better yet, “Correct thought is the essence of being”. During the reiki attunement the energy of the attunement causes the Reiki symbols to become a stimulus and the particular energy the symbol represents which is present during the attunement becomes the response.

During an attunement you are given the connection with the energy through the symbols and they are used to help you focus. The first reiki symbol of the 3 learned at Level 2 Reiki is the power symbol called “Cho Ku Rei” and is used to focus the energy and used for protection. The other two are Sei Hei Ki and Hon Sha ze Sho Nen

Use the first three Reiki symbols in conjunction with each other to fashion the Reiki energy to its best use for each individual client. For analogic example, the first symbol, the power symbol, magnifies Reiki like a magnifying glass magnifies the sun's energy.

Either way, a significant number of these newer symbols are in existence and are used by more and more Western Reiki practitioners to supplement their practice.
