In our modern society people are increasingly taking their health into their own hands and making their own informed choices about what is best for them, rather than relying on Western medicine alone. The current trend for increased well-being is leading people to a mixture of Western and Eastern philosophies. We now more readily accept that physical conditions often have emotional causes, stress being one of the major factors in causing poor health. Reiki is a Japanese healing system that works on the body, mind and soul, creating a natural balance between all three.

Linking the Physical and Emotional

As Reiki healers we are trained to treat the person as a ‘whole’ meaning we look at the physical and emotional bodies and their interconnection.

We have seen through our healing work that certain events in people’s lives have often triggered their conditions. Major traumas in people’s lives will generally manifest as a physical illness eventually. Even seemingly inconsequential events will accumulate over time to create a physical problem. Ailments such as lower back pain, arthritis, stomach disorders (Crohn’s, Celiac, gut permeability etc) can be aggravated and in some cases caused by emotional trauma and stress.

The Main Offender – Stress

Recognising Stress

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below you may be suffering from the effects of stress: trouble sleeping, headaches, constipation, diarrhoea, irritability, lack of energy, lack of concentration, poor appetite or over eating, anger, sadness, higher risk of asthma and arthritis flare-ups, stomach cramping and bloating, skin problems, depression, weight gain or loss, heart problems, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, neck and/or back pain, decrease in sexual desire.

Causes of Stress

Stress begins from the moment you are born when you are first separated from your mother. You become stressed when are you are hungry, need changing, need a hug etc. As you grow up your interactions with other people cause you stress such as: gaining parents and peers approval, succeeding at school, forming relationships, relationship breakdowns, working, not working, commuting, environmental factors (external toxins, tobacco, pollution, alcohol, food), hormonal factors, exams, driving, shopping, having children, losing loved ones, moving house, money and lack of, to mention but a few! Stress attacks us from every direction, everyday, whether we recognise it or not. In some areas stress is perceived as being a positive attribute but in reality you are subjecting your entire body to a chemical attack, creating an imbalance in your normal healthy bodily functions. It is no wonder that so many of us are plagued with so many different illnesses. Any form of change or even imagined change is stressful.

We generally tend to live fast paced lives with ever increasing financial demands. We are brought up to be ambitious and high achievers, focusing on our careers and acquiring material possessions as the answer to our problems. We associate the accumulation of goods with success and well-being. We are always striving for a bigger house, better job, faster car, bigger TV and other status symbols that demonstrate our life’s achievements. We all feel the effects of the pressure and stress we put ourselves under. Many believe that by simply joining a gym or doing a few aerobics classes, they are balancing their physical and emotional needs. To create a balance we need to spend as much time and energy focusing on our emotional needs as we do on our physical needs.

Health and vitality is not about a few token gestures like joining a class or following faddy diets it is a life style issue. Every aspect of your life needs to be considered from your diet to the way you perform every task in your daily life and your interactions with people and circumstances. Everything you do needs to be with conscious awareness of the consequences on yourself and those around you.

“If man’s vitality and energy do not propel his own will, his disease cannot be cured’ (Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine). To achieve health and well -being requires you taking a pro-active approach the same as in any work environment. If you are not prepared to take the necessary steps then it is your health that will suffer.

It is important to look for the signs indicating that your health is waning and seek guidance as early as possible; “Coming to see a doctor when you are very sick is like waiting until you are thirsty to dig a well”. (Master Kwan, The Healing Art of Qi Gong, Master Hong Liu, 1997). Remember prevention is better than cure.

Methods For the Body, Mind and Soul

Breathe Deeply

Breathing is the essence of life. When you breathe in slowly and deeply you take in large amounts of oxygen from the environment. This oxygen is taken into your circulation where it binds to red blood cells. This oxygen then provides the “fuel” to produce energy. By exhaling fully you expel as much carbon dioxide and waste products as possible. Breathing is something we take for granted but this does not mean that we are doing it in the most efficient way.

Most of us use only 10-20% of our full breathing capacity. This leaves us lacking in energy as we accumulate more and more toxins in our body. Emotional distress causes our breathing to become increasingly erratic and shallow. Breathing in this way can cause many detrimental physiological reactions such as the accumulation of waste products like carbon dioxide and lactic acid in the body.

Breathing slowly and deeply can cause many positive reactions within the body. If you slow your breathing down to eight breaths a minute it induces a meditative state, six breaths per minute stimulates your pituitary gland (which boosts the endocrine system influencing almost every cell, organ and function of our bodies), four breaths per minute stimulates the pineal gland (which helps to regulate your sleeping pattern through the release of melatonin).

You Are What You Eat

It is important to have a nutritionally balanced healthy diet suited to individual needs. Symptoms such as excessive hunger can be caused by the body screaming out for nutrients, which it is not receiving. Western dieting techniques often focus on lowering cholesterol and weight loss whereas Eastern diets often focus on nourishing the organs to foster better physical and emotional health.

We all too often associate thin as being healthy but what is more important is that your body is obtaining the correct nutrients and is the right weight for you. Someone who has an apparently healthy and fit body may not necessarily have healthy organs. Too much emphasis is placed on physical appearance as an indicator of people’s success, health and well being, even if this is achieved through pain and damage to the body’s vital organs.

Be Yourself, By Yourself

Everybody needs time to themselves, away from the pressures of work, family and friends. Having quiet time by yourself creates a stillness of mind and body and establishes a healthy detachment from your everyday existence. This enables you to give yourself the respect and consideration you and all of us deserve and allows you to think in a more clear and focused way. If you find you are unable to spend quiet time with yourself without any distractions then it is very probable that you need emotional healing.

It is important to incorporate into your daily regime methods which help you to relax and encourage your body to activate it’s own healing responses. There are many sorts of classes you can participate in (Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong) that foster the individuals ability to self heal and consider their health, as well as direct healing methods such as Reiki.

The best way to maintain good health is to integrate into your life a regime that clears energy blockages and allows life force energy (universal energy and internal energy) to flow freely throughout your body. This nourishes your organs, muscles and joints as well as healing emotional traumas and giving you greater clarity of thought and insight. This enables you to lead a healthier life. By making these kind of lifestyle decisions you are empowering yourself by taking responsibility for your own well-being. We need to take responsibility for our actions before we can ever truly be happy and healed.

How Reiki Can Help You

Reiki is a form of non-intrusive energy healing originating in Japan. Reiki is used widely around the world and is offered in some hospitals in the US and the UK. Naturally occurring electromagnetic energy (universal energy) is channelled by an ‘attuned’ practitioner into the patient at the frequency of the condition being treated. The practitioner acts purely as a channel for the energy but in an active way using visualisation, intention and sacred reiki symbols. Reiki can be used to treat yourself as well as others. Many people learn to use Reiki purely for their own self-development.

Reiki can be learned by anybody and everybody. It is not as is often claimed limited to those with a ‘spiritual’ or ‘healing’ gift. The only pre-requisite is an open mind and desire to learn how to help yourself and others. Students are attuned using a traditional method passed down from the original founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui. It cannot be learned from a book or by distance learning. The interaction between the teacher and the student is an integral part of becoming a Reiki practitioner.

What Are The Benefits of Reiki?

Reiki induces profound relaxation / meditative state which allows the patient to detach from their everyday existence and look in objectively on their lives, providing them with the sort of clarity needed to make positive, healthy decisions about their life.

Everyone picks up emotional trauma throughout their life whether they recognise it or not. Reiki heals the pain associated with past emotional traumas, which frees the patient from the constraints placed on their life by past events (e.g. bereavement, bullying, lack of parental affection etc).

Reiki also helps physical conditions by clearing energetic blockages to allow the body to self heal and by working directly on the condition using the frequency of energy required for that condition. It can be used to treat any condition but a clinical diagnosis is required. Some of the problems we have used Reiki to treat are: sports injuries, back pain, muscle damage, broken bones, allergies, addictions, cancer.

What Happens During a Reiki Treatment?

The patient lays fully clothed on a treatment couch with their eyes closed. The practitioner places their hands in various positions above the patient’s body.

Experiences of Reiki are individual but many people often comment of feeling at the very least intense relaxation, clarity and serenity. For others Reiki is a life-changing event. The treatment can last between 45 minutes and 2 hours depending on individual needs.

If You Want to Learn Reiki

Anybody can learn Reiki. It is a simple form of energy healing that requires no specific spiritual or religious beliefs. Reiki is for everyone and be wary of anybody who tells you otherwise. Ensure that the Reiki teacher belongs to an accredited association and teaches an accredited course.

Be careful of websites that offer distant attunements and treatments. These qualifications will not be recognised and you cannot guarantee the sort of treatment you will be getting. Make sure you go to a teacher who offers a certified course and gives post course support for free.

I have my level two reiki training… but I find that sometimes the energy is much stronger than other times. Lately I have not been able to successfully transfer a strong stream of energy. Does anyone have tips for getting into the state where you have a strong stream of energy passing through you?
thanks Alot!

Celeste – as a Level II, you should have received 3 symbols and your teacher should’ve trained you on how to use them. I recommend that you start every day by drawing the power symbol on your left hand, chant its name 3 times, and slap your hands together to get its energy flowing. Then lay your hands on your heart and give yourself Reiki for about 15 minutes. Every day. If your teacher did your attunement correctly, you should feel it strongly, and after doing it several days in a row, there should be no question that it’s flowing. If you do still question, I would go back to your teacher and ask that your attunement be redone. Every teacher makes mistakes sometimes. I’ve been teaching and doing attunements since 2000, and I sometimes make mistakes that foul it up. If your teacher was distracted or missed a step or didn’t pull enough energy, sometimes it doesn’t take. So go ask to have it redone. And unfortunately there are a lot of charlatans in Reiki. I would ask to know your teacher’s lineage. He/she should be able to trace who gave their attunement back to either Japan or to one of the 22 Masters attuned by Mrs. Takata in Hawaii.

I’ve seen Kirilian photos that do show the energetic difference that Reiki makes. Here’s a sample: http://www.kirlian.org/kirlian/session.htm or try searching "Reiki Kirilian" for others. But as far as "proving" it, I think the proof is in the pudding. Find a true practitioner who holds Reiki "shares", which are usually open, free meetings where people give each other Reiki. Look at reiki.meetup.com for groups in your area. And see what you think. I use Reiki every day on myself, my house, my office, my pets, as well as other people who visit my studio, and I’ve seen amazing results myself. I’ve had some really interesting results combining Reiki with hypnosis. I wouldn’t bother arguing with people about it. I just invite any skeptics to come to my studio, lay on my massage table, and after 1/2 hour, walk out feeling amazing and know for themselves its truth and beauty. Blessed be!

To AStrangeDuck999: it appears that you are not a Reiki Master and are therefore unqualified to know about the attunement process and whether or not it can fail. Believe me, it can absolutely be done incorrectly and fail. Thanks for your list of resources. FYI I received all my attunements through William Rand’s organization www.reiki.org.

I’m considering contacting a Reiki Master to study with, and I’m just looking for others to share their experiences in studying or practicing such a thing as well. When beginning to better understand Reiki how did it effect you? How quickly did you learn or better feel energy?

Just looking to hear your stories.

Thanks, peace.

You don’t have to try hard to learn Reiki. You will be taught how it works of course and learn the symbols which become part of you very quickly. You will also be taught hand positions. As you do Reiki, you will begin to become more sensitive to what you are feeling and problems spots in your client.

It is not difficult and will happen naturally. Your spirit reiki guides do most of the work and you just have to allow yourself to be an instrument.

Taking Reiki courses can dramatically change your life in so many ways. Some people spend years meditating every single day and will be unable to achieve in that time, what Reiki courses can help to achieve over a much shorter period. By taking a Reiki course and self-healing every day many of my students have achieved things that they previously would never have thought possible. If someone had told me that by learning Reiki I would find complete happiness and fulfilment 10 years ago I would have laughed, but now I know better! It isn’t rocket science, Reiki courses are simple to learn and by self-healing every day you can connect with your intuition and heal yourself on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. You don’t need to spend years meditating, in a two day Reiki course you can obtain the ability to heal yourself and others on all levels for a wide range of problems and conditions. You can change your life and the lives of others. Reiki is simple and natural to learn and absolutely anyone can learn Reiki if they are taught properly.

There are so many benefits that Reiki courses can offer that it is difficult to narrow it down to one article but I have listed below some reasons to take Reiki courses and what you won’t get from learning Reiki courses.

Reasons to take Reiki courses

• Reiki courses teach you how to self-heal, so that on a daily basis you can balance your body, mind and soul and heal any physical problems/conditions or emotional traumas that need addressing. A Reiki course will empower you to take control of your own health and well-being.

• Many people are looking for direction and guidance in life but do not know where to find it. If you feel like something is missing from your life, then you can benefit from learning a Reiki course. We all need spiritual fulfilment and a spiritual connection to be truly happy and if we are lacking in that, then we really have nothing. Learning a Reiki course will allow you to connect to your intuition or higher self. By doing this you will be able to make the choices that are right for you in life and follow your higher path on earth. By understanding the Universe and your place in the Universe you can achieve the true happiness that comes from satisfying your soul instead of your desires.

• Stress is a major contributing factor in a whole range of illnesses and millions of work days are lost per year due to stressed employees. A Reiki course can help you to find inner peace and clarity and by self-healing every day your worries will not seem so significant, as you start to see the ‘bigger picture’ and more purpose to life.

• Reiki courses don’t just relieve stress and help you to relax as is commonly believed. Reiki can actually be used to directly work on physical and emotional conditions. Reiki works by channelling the appropriate frequency into the body to bring the damaged area(s) back to a harmonious state of being. By taking level 1 and 2 Reiki courses you can learn how to use Reiki for yourself and others for conditions such as: stress, cancer, depression, torn ligaments, sports injuries, nerve damage, fractures, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, addictions and more. Reiki can help with any illness.

• A process called ‘attunements’ are used on Reiki courses. These connect you to your higher self and help you to know yourself better. Many people like to think they are being true to their self but do not really understand their own true nature. Reiki shows you who you really are and opens up your mind to the things that you need in life rather than what you thought you wanted from life. Truth eludes many but a Reiki course and constant self-healing will open your mind to the truth and when you find it you will be amazed. As your awareness increases you will steadily begin to follow your higher path and will be astonished by what you can achieve.

• Do you ever feel like you are taking from life and not giving anything back? If you take the level 1 and 2 Reiki courses you will be able to offer Reiki treatments to others as well as yourself. Helping others with Reiki is a very soul satisfying endeavour and there is nothing quite like being able to offer a healing gift to someone in need. Treating others with Reiki and seeing them walk away happy, healthy and contented will show you the true meaning of unconditional love.

• Learning a Reiki course and self-healing will help you to see people as they really are. Often in life we give people the benefit of the doubt even if deep down we do not really trust them. We can often be blind to dishonesty and to people who are just out to use us. Learning Reiki can make you feel like you had lived in darkness your entire life and suddenly the light has been switched on. You can see people as they really are. You can distinguish your real friends from those who have a hidden agenda. This will help you to only give your time and energy to those who really deserve it.

• Everyone accumulates emotional traumas in life, whether they are consciously aware of this or otherwise. Many people think that by burying a trauma or even by talking through a trauma that they have dealt with it. This is not true. Emotional traumas leave a negative energy in our bodies and if this energy is left to fester and not removed our emotional traumas continually hold us back in life and prevent us from achieving our full potential. Reiki courses teach you how to heal these emotional traumas by healing the negative energy associated with them. This will ensure that you no longer feel any pain linked with the past and you will finally be free to be your true self, without anything to hold you back.

• Many people get trapped in a vicious circle follow the same unhealthy lifestyle patterns and habits over their lifetime. Despite attempts to change this behaviour many people are too bogged down by their life and unmotivated to make the huge changes they need in their life. Reiki courses can change the way you look at life and deal with situations. Suddenly it doesn’t become so difficult to make those essential changes. They just naturally occur as and when they need to. A newfound perspective will help you to love yourself more and love others more but in such a way that they will not take you for granted.

• I briefly mentioned it earlier but it deserves a point to itself, happiness is something that everyone longs for and very few people actually achieve. The founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, said that Reiki was the ‘art of inviting happiness.’ People very often misconceive what it means to be truly happy and wrongly associate fulfilment with, for example: their status in society, the pursuit of physical desires such as material possessions, having a family, being intellectual and high achieving, recreational drinking and drugs, having many sexual partners. All of these things can only lead to short term fulfilment and then the person is left wondering where their next high is going to come from. True happiness comes from being inextricably connected to your intuition or higher self and following your true path on earth, from understanding the Universe and your place in the Universe. Without that bond the soul suffers.

Reiki courses can set you on the path to enlightenment. Whether you choose to self-heal everyday is up to you and how far and fast you take it is up to you but Reiki shows you your path. Once you set foot upon the path and begin the journey you know that you are on the way to discovering happiness. Who could ask for more? Reiki is much more than just a therapy. Reiki is the way of the Universe.

What Reiki courses won’t do!

• Taking Reiki courses will not miraculously make your life perfect. You have to put in the hard work and effort of self-healing everyday and as your intuition guides you, you in turn must follow it. Some people come to a Reiki course thinking that this is the culmination of their journey. Taking a Reiki course is the beginning of your journey. We provide the connection to your intuition and the tools to self-heal and pursue enlightenment and the rest of the hard work is up to you. The rewards for your spiritual and self-development are infinite and invaluable though, when you put in the effort.

• There are no gurus! When you learn a Reiki course you are given a foundation for self-healing and self-development and perhaps some general guidance. A Reiki course is not an opportunity to find a guru who will tell you what to do in every aspect of your life. The choices are yours to make and yours only. We are Reiki teachers, we are not gurus and in reality there are no gurus, just intuition. Trust your own intuition and everything will fall into place.

• Taking Reiki courses to practitioner level will not make you an overnight millionaire. Reiki is about helping the people that need your help and following your higher path. If you choose to use Reiki to exploit people you will damage your own happiness and higher path.

The NCCAM, an agency which receives grant money from the National Institutes of Health, classifies Reiki Therapy as a form of Complementary and Alternative therapy, just as they do with chiropractic care, Acupuncture, and massage therapy. As such, why would someone continue to have a negative perception about Reiki Therapy?

Firstly I believe that people tend to be afraid of what they don’t know or understand. That’s the beginning of the problem. In addition, in most countries, reiki is still relatively unregulated. This means that anyone can call themselves a reiki practitioner/master/teacher with no knowledge or understanding with very little legal repercussions. I personally know people who insist they are bonafide reiki practitioners who were trained and attuned while they slept from some guy they paid $60 to overseas. I tried explaining that they were scammed, and that you cannot be trained and attuned while you sleep, but because they’ve paid out their money, they feel they can legitimately make that claim. So what happens from here? those people go out and advertise themselves. Any clients they do see would very quickly come to realize that this person is full of crap and knows nothing.

The problem with that is that often Reiki gets the blame rather then the person who made false claims. And thus the gossip spreads.

In addition, some people do not really understand how the body works, and therefore put far more trust in pills and western medicine then they should. Most western people also have a disconnect between what they eat, exercise, sleep and how they feel on a day to day basis. So these people are never going to accept reiki no matter what others say.

But times are changing. Reiki is becoming more mainstream as people become more educated on it. There are associations out there that work to regulate the industry and who advocate for the government to take a bigger role in monitoring claims and education. This will help hugely.

In the meantime, as a Reiki Master myself, I don’t worry about the nay sayers. I put my energy towards work to help educate those who are interested in learning, and providing treatments for those who want it.

Just my thoughts.
